Each day a theme will be presented to provide a springboard from which to build their day. We have introduced a new theme for thiese holidays, that of pirates. So if you are a seafaring tinkerer, then this one is for your. Tinkerers can be involved as little or as much as they would like. At the end of each day, the tinkerer who is voted as having the prop which is both functional and aesthetic will receive a single pass to the Rialto Movie Theatre.

Themes will include:
Fantasy
Structures
Set Design
Costumes
Transport
Science Fiction
Robots
Weapons
Pirates

Of course, in keeping with our philosophy of tinkerers managing themselves, if they come with an idera of their own, they can do that as well. We are all excited to give this a try, and see who out there will be the next generation of Weta Workshop tinkerers.

To make a booking contact us.

Financial Challenges Ahead.
We are currently revising our fee structure. Since we started Tinker School at our current site in October 2015, we have kept the daily fee at the half day price of $40+GST. This was to broaden our client base and give people the opportunity to see what we do and how we go about doing. This has been the case for the last three years. In that time our landlord has been fairly generous in what we pay for rent. However, he has increased our rent to the point that we need to look at how to best meet the shortfall.

We are welcoming feedback from our community of clients and tinkerers as to how we can best deal with this financial hurdle. These include:

Have a Makers Market Fair (once a term);

Set up a Repair Cafe on a Saturday;

Get Sponsorship from within the Community;

Get more Tinkerers to attend the Tinker School;

Apply for Grants and other funding sources;

Increase our fee structure.

There are pros and cons to each, and to implement each requires time and resources that we do not currently have. Some of the projects are in the pipeline but take time to get going. It will also require support within the community for each to succeed. Your feedback on these initiatives would be welcome, and any time or resources that you may be able to contribute would be most welcome. We aim to have long term measures in place by February 2019.

In the Meantime
The full day fee is normally $55+GST. However we feel that may be too much of a fee increase. So we are looking to set full day tinkering at $50/day +GST.

If you are happy with this arrangement, let us know. If you have other thoughts regarding our situation, we would welcome them.

Thank you for your time on this matter. and your support. We would not exist if we did not have your support.

We wish you all a great finish to the term and l;ook forward to seeing you these holidays.

Regards
The Tinker School Team
1536753600http://www.kidzinc.co.nz/news/54/Tinker-Spring-School-2018http://www.kidzinc.co.nz829Tinker Spring School 2018http://www.kidzinc.co.nz/news/54/Tinker-Spring-School-2018 Tinker Winter School 2018http://www.kidzinc.co.nz/news/53/Tinker-Winter-School-2018
Tinker Winter School is about to get underway.

The Rialto Movie Prop Challenge
Due to the popularity of the Rialto Movie Prop Challenge, we have partnered once again with the Rialto Cinemas Dunedin to bring movie prop making into the realms of tinkering. We simply call it Tinker After School. From 3.00-5.30pm each day, Tinkerland will be open for tinkerers to think, make, create & solve. Click on the link to check out the course fees for the term. We also know that there are tinkerers who would like to tinker, but are unable to attend as they have no way of travelling to us. However, in good tinkerschool fashion, we have come up with a solution.
Tinker Rideshare
We talked about this matter with parents and got a perspective from both sides. As a result we came up with a rideshare service simply called Tinker Rideshare. Check out the link and if you would like to be involved then contact us, and contact the person to partner with you in Tinker Rideshare. As the summer continues to bring warm weather, there are things growing in the community we call the Tinker School.

2018

2017 was a year of few downs and many ups. We access no government funding, which means that we are dependent on parent fees and other initiatives. After school course numbers dropped with the departure of many of our international families midway through the year. They were very supportive of what we do as it contrasts greatly to the education they receive in their home countries. We were involved in the Love the Lindsey CreekFest and continue to be involved with local sporting groups and other community activities.

Summer Courses 2018

The Tinker School commences its care and enrichment programmes on Wednesday 3rd January 2018. We are open daily from 8.30-5.30. To make a booking contact us here. Check out here, to find out more of the types of activities and projects being offered this summer.

After School Care & Enrichment 2018

The Tinker School ASC&E programme starts on Monday 29th January 2018. It runs from 3.00-5.30 daily. We pick up from NEVN School. Intermediate and secondary students can be involved in projects of their own design. Check out the Tinker School facebook page for more information or check out our website page here. Spaces are available if you are keen to be a part of the Tinker School Experience at NEV.

Northern Galaxy Football Academy

As part of our commitment to develop youth leadership, we will be training our Northern Junior Youth Grade team to deliver a coaching programme for 6-12 year old footballers.

We are working in partnership with Northern Junior Association Football Club (NJAFC for short), who along with Maori Hill are under the umbrella of Northern Football Club (senior club). This relationship is to support NJAFC their QualityMark accreditation football provider in Dunedin. This is an exciting prospect for the football commmunity as it will access resources, people and equipment to keep building and developing football in our area.

All proceeds from the coaching clinic will go towards continued youth development and leadership opportunities in North Dunedin.

Tinker School is working with NJAFC to support football development in Dunedin, together we are training youth and willing parents to become coaches. We will be offering the New Zealand Football training programme in a team coaching environment that will have a the skills and games to build any young players’ enthusiasm in this sport. More information can be found here.

Dates: 24th-26th January 2018
Time: 10.00-3.00
Venue: Chingford Park
Cost: $20/day/player
Bookings: Contact Us here

Prototype Academy

We had a successful team up with Phillipa Dick from Hatch, Keir Russell from Fablab, and Amadeo Ballesteros from Fun Science, during the Winter holiday programme. It was a vibrant and exciting two weeks. The aim was to work together, share ideas, resources and staff to provide an unique holiday experience. Since the team up, we established the Hive Otago Trust, and were successful in securing a GigCity grant to develop digital literacy around Dunedin. Watch this space as this unfolds in 2018.

Tinker Coffee & Barista

Tinker School and Grid Coffee partnered to present a youth development proposal to the Valley Project Dragons' Den event. Shortly after, we ran an open day in December for enrolments and will be starting our first youth coffee & barista training course starting in February. If you have teenagers who are interested then contact us.

Tinker School Flea Market
Tinker School has managed to secure another space in the building, which is dedicated to resource storage and small scale workshop. It works beautifully. During the week, tinkerers work and build their projects. Staff also work on projects. Once a month we will be running a Tinker School Flea Market. In November we ran our first market day, had the bunting out to show that there was something on. Stallholders presented handmade products, coffee was available, and music provided by Catgut & Steel, and Spinster, two local artists who supported this initiative. We aim to make this a regular event to encourage community vitality, resilience and entrepreneurship.
Twilight Tinkering Classes
We opened the Tinker School in the evenings over the Spring and Summer to give adults the chance to tinker as well. We offered woodcraft, cabinetmaking, blacksmithing, repurposing and restoration and leather craft. In 2018, if any of these peak an interest in your tinkering soul, then contact us to discuss how these classes may work for you. This is an exciting opportunity we are keen to continue.

Like Us on Facebook
We have a page set up that we encourage parents to like. There are some posts that ask for you to feedback on the type of programme your child/ren would like to be involved in. We also post articles that are relevant to the focus we have in community development through working with children and families in the community. You can find the Tinker School Facebook page here.

Enrolment Steps
If you are looking to enrol your child/ren into our holiday programme please contact us and provide the name/s of your children, their age and the school they attend and the dates that they will be attending.

If you are seeking a WINZ subsidy, we are not accredited and you would not be eligible.

If you are an existing customer you will not need to fill out another enrolment form, you will just need to let us know if any of the details have changed. If you are enrolling for the first time, you will need to fill in an enrolment form and bring it along on the first day.

Affordable Childcare
The Tinker School ensure that all children can have access to our experience. This summer, parents can have full day access to the programme for half day price. That is a $60.00 day programme for only $40.00+GST.

Invoicing & Payment Plans
All parents are invoiced at the end of the programme. If you are new to the programme, we ask for a deposit up front before the commencement of the programme.

If you are looking to reduce the costs and will be seeking long term use of our holiday programme, we have payment plans that take the financial pressure off families by spreading the cost over a 12 month period. For more information regarding this service follow the link here.
We receive no funding and operate entirely on Parent Fees.
Therefore, we ask that parents that have outstanding accounts to finalise them by the end of the school term. The cash flow of our business is directly tagged to pay our great staff. To ensure that our great service continues your prompt settlement of accounts is vital.

Last Laugh

Q & A with Kidz

Q: Name the four seasons.
A: Salt, pepper, mustard and vinegar.

Q: Explain one of the processes by which water can be made safe to drink.
A: Flirtation makes water safe to drink because it removes large pollutants like grit, sand, dead sheep and canoeists.

Q: How is dew formed
A: The sun shines down on the leaves and makes them perspire.

Q: How can you delay milk turning sour ?(brilliant, love this)
A: Keep it in the cow.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to hearing from you.
Regards

Andrew & the Tinker Team

For more information on events and related articles, check out the information on our website or contact us.

Feel free to forward this newsletter on to other parents who may be interested in a quality holiday programme.

If you are receiving this email and no longer require our services, please reply with “no thank you”, so we can remove you from our mailing list.1515236400http://www.kidzinc.co.nz/news/50/Tinker-During-Summer-2018http://www.kidzinc.co.nz820Tinker During Summer 2018http://www.kidzinc.co.nz/news/50/Tinker-During-Summer-2018 Tinker School Christmas 2017http://www.kidzinc.co.nz/news/49/Tinker-School-Christmas-2017
Tinker School Christmas Programme 2017

Tinker School and Fun Science with Amadeo.
The Christmas school holidays arrive in two weeks. There was music from local legends, Catgut and Steel, and the likes of Spinster, na d Kerian Veraine on Hurdy-Gurdy. The effort is to fund the Barista and Coffee Training course we are developing. Registration for it will be open to youth aged between 14-24 years of age.

We will also be running a Tinker Village Market day as well, with stall holder wares, food, entertainment, as well as coffee, from our trainees.
Grid Coffee
As we grow our tinker community, we are working with other people in the local area, including Nikki, Gavin and Brian from Grid Cafe. Together we aim to provide education and training to youth (14-24 years of age) around coffee culture. We want a high quality, artisan approach to coffee training in a real world context of community engagement and enterprise.

We aim to work alongside youth to give them knowledge, skills and practice in the art of coffee. A holistic approach which includes the sourcing, roasting, preparation and presentation of the coffee, as well as the cleaning and maintenance around the tools and equipment of the trade.

By pairing up the training of coffee with the concept of a repair cafe encourages an atmosphere of learning and growing, engaging in a culture of know how and can do. This is the philosophy that shapes the Tinker School philosophy.

This is a Tinker School community initiative funded by the patrons who use our after school and holiday care and enrichment services. Additional sources of funding are through initiatives like the Flea Market and the Tinker Village Market.

So if you have time, if you know people who would like to come and see what we do and how we do it, come along to the Barista Training Open Day on Saturday 16th December from 11.00 - 4.00pm. I am hoping that it will carry on into the school holidays so that we have the best days for outdoor activities. Planning is well underway for the programme of activities. We are aiming to include a lot of technology activities.

Tinker Time Challenge
We aim to engage students in hands on, meaningful activities that focus on projects, problems or play. Currently we are developing a range of time focussed projects. These projects are designed to be completed in a set time frame. These time frames are of 1hour, 2hour, 5hour, 10 hour and 20 hour duration.

In our experience working with tinkerers, many ask how long the project will take. Often students embark on a project without knowing how long it takes to make it, or they underestimate how long the project will take. By framing the project in terms of how long it will take, they come to recognise that time is an invaluable resource which is necessary to complete project work.

Check out our Tinker School Facebook page for ideas and examples of projects that students may enjoy being involved in. Otherwise they may have an idea of their own which they want to make.

Either way, the end result will be amazing projects that will continue to inspire and engage them in further projects.

Information and Enrolments
The following will give you a bit more information.

We have a range of activities here developed by our own resident project guru Drew Wills that are suitable for inquisitive, curious and hands on maker types of children.

Head back to our website and check out the links to get a better idea of our daily structures and activities here.

Enrolment forms can be downloaded here.
