He asked for help and she could see why. Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots still didn't want to go on. By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat.

She almost cried when the little boy said, 'Teacher, they're on the wrong feet.' She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn't any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the right feet.

He then announced, 'These aren't my boots.'

She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, 'Why didn't you say so?', like she wanted to. Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet. No sooner had they gotten the boots off when he said, 'They're my brother's boots. My Mum made me wear them.'

Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry. But, she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots on his feet again. Helping him into his coat, she asked, 'Now, where are your Mittens?'

He said, 'I stuffed 'em in the toes of my boots.'

She will be eligible for parole in three years.

See you next newsletter.

Regards
Andrew & the Tinker School Team

For more information on events and related articles, check out the information on our website or contact us.

Feel free to forward this newsletter on to other parents who may be interested in a quality holiday programme.

If you are receiving this email and no longer require our services, please reply with “no thank you”, so we can remove you from our mailing list.1498132800http://www.kidzinc.co.nz/news/46/Tinker-School-Winter-Solstice-Care-Enrichment-2017http://www.kidzinc.co.nz807Tinker School Winter Solstice Care & Enrichment 2017http://www.kidzinc.co.nz/news/46/Tinker-School-Winter-Solstice-Care-Enrichment-2017 Tinker As Autumn Falls Upon Ushttp://www.kidzinc.co.nz/news/33/Tinker-As-Autumn-Falls-Upon-Us
For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. He swerved to avoid hitting the Bunny, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of his car and was hit. The basket of eggs went flying all over the place.

The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road, and got out to see what had become of the Bunny carrying the basket. Much to his dismay, the colorful Bunny was dead. The driver felt guilty and began to cry.

A woman driving down the same highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong.

"I feel terrible," he explained, "I accidentally hit the Easter Bunny and killed it. There may not be an Easter because of me. What should I do?"

The woman told the man not to worry. She knew exactly what to do. She went to her car trunk, and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead Bunny, and sprayed the entire contents of the can onto the little furry animal.

Miraculously the Easter Bunny came to back life, jumped up, picked up the spilled eggs and candy, waved its paw at the two humans and hopped on down the road. 50 yards away the Easter Bunny stopped, turned around, waved and hopped on down the road another 50 yards, turned, waved, hopped another 50 yards and waved again!

The man was astonished. He said to the woman, "What in heaven's name is in your spray can? What was it that you sprayed on the Easter Bunny?"

The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said: "Hair spray. Restores life to dead hair. Adds permanent wave."

Thanks for getting through to the end of this newsletter. We look forward to seeing you this Easter. It became known as the Tinker School. It operates from 347 North Road alongside Woodstock Furniture. Youth-led projects and community courses are being developed here. Recently a Blacksmithing course was run. Many members of the community attended with the youngest blacksmith being 8 years old. We will be running a Repair Cafe in a couple of weeks.

The Tinker School aims to be a complementary way to build the resilience of the NEV community. It does this by building the students character and their capability. Kidz Inc has a focus on developing the character of the student, whereas the Tinker School focuses on their capability. Bringing the two together requires an alignment of values. A toolbox with good tools will assist with this.
The Tinker Toolbox
The right tool for the right job. If your only tool is a hammer, you will treat all problems as a nail. The toolbox for the students learning journey to build their character and capability will need good tools. Here are the main tinker tools:

The Avatar is like the map (a tool) of the Tinker school. It shows what is valued and how they become of value. It is about purpose and direction.

The Choice Action is a tool that allows us to recognise what motivates and shapes our behaviours and actions. It is about needs and motivation.

The Gung Ho is a tool for team building and working together. It is about teamwork and effectiveness.

The Tinker Process is the tool required to solve problems, present solutions to a good question. It is about know how and can do.

The Heros' Journey is the narrative, trials and milestones we create as we embark on the journey. It is our narrative, we are the Hero of our story.

We shape the narrative by the choices we make and the decisions we take. We are the hero in our own story. By using the tools listed above, we aim to ensure that the gifts, the solutions that are made, and the problems that are solved will make the world we live in a little more extra ordinary.

Social Network
The gift of belonging, one of our key principles that shape the culture of Kidz Inc Tinker School. Kidz Inc and the Tinker School both have a page on the Facebook network. Both will have updates and information regarding care and courses here in our community.

Write a testimonial on one of our Facebook pages, and book your child/ren into our Christmas programme and there will be a lucky Christmas dip awaiting their arrival. Your word of mouth recommendations is our most valued form of community communication.

Christmas & New Year Holiday Care 2017
We aim to run projects that have a Christmas theme, tree decorations, cards, wrapping paper, muffins and any offerings that your children may want to bring to the table. There will be the traditional movie day and peer support games.

Looking ahead to Summer 2017, we aim to provide interesting and engaging activities. If its hot, there will be water squirters, if its windy, there will be kites, and on rainy days, there will be projects that the children bring to the project. Our first and foremost consideration when planning the activities is to involve the children in the planning. As the green buds grow on the trees, there are things growing in the community we call Kidz Inc.

Tinker School Venue
After four years running the after school programme at North East Valley Normal School, we have relocated to a premise that is better suited for our programme. The space at 347 North Road allows us to set up resources permanently. We are including software and hardware that can provide children opportunity to do graphic design, filmmaking, studio recording equipment, 3D design and printing, robotics, online games development and much much more. We have a good workshop facility for designing, prototyping of ideas, painting and finishing. It has been a great place for the ASP students to explore and discover.

We run the Tinker School during term time from 4.00-6.00 daily. Intermediate and secondary students can be involved in projects of their own design. Check out the Tinker School facebook page for more information or check out our website page here.

Kidz Inc Catchment
Kidz Inc NEV service is placed to meet the childcare needs of the NEV community and surrounding suburbs, including Pine Hill, Opoho, Liberton, Ravensbourne and West Harbour as well as parents who may be studying at the Otago University. Spaces are still available if you are keen to be a part of the Kidz Inc Experience at NEV.

LEGO Mindstorm Robotics
I recently visited the Robocup in Dunedin to see such a diverse range of Mindstorm projects that were constructed and programmed to meet challenges. These challenges include Robofootball, robodance, and search and rescue. Each challenge required students to design a machine that would include motors, sensors and a computer known as a brick, and then programme it to work within the parameters of the challenge. This was a totally engaging experience to see teams of young people work through these challenges. At Kidz Inc we will have access to LEGO Mindstorm for these Spring holidays and will be running courses in how to make these projects. If you are interested in being a part of this programme let us know. Places will be limited.

Community Engagement
Kidz Inc have been involved in many community activities in the NEV. This includes providing football coaching for the players at NJAFC. We support the Circulation Trust for circo-arts training and performance through the Festival of Tricks. Kidz Inc is looking to establish a youth development programme in the Valley to support youth 14-21 years of age. It will be modelled on Kidz Inc philosophy but upgraded for older students with an enterprise focus. This is an exciting development. By using the Kidz Inc Service you are supporting these locally grown initiatives.

Like Us on Facebook
We have a page set up that we encourage parents to like. There are some posts that ask for you to feedback on the type of programme your child/ren would like to be involved in. It will be a long term for all children, and they will be looking forward to their break. We will be putting together a great programme for this Winter.

Kidz Inc 10th Birthday
Kidz Inc is in its 10th year of operation and we are celebrating. We got our start providing the school holiday programme for Fisher and Paykel in 2004 and have not looked back. They saw that we offered a rich experience in the activities that we offered, as many of our staff have very pragmatic skills in design and technology. Drew Wills is our resident guru in this area and he has been on board since the beginning and still offers his ingenuity today.

We have a very particular philosophy in regards to working with children, as we constantly explore the best approaches to providing enrichment activities and encouraging children to take ownership of the day. We have a technology totem that acts as a guide to facilitate this:

The Spirit of the Squirrel: Engage in Meaningful and Purposeful Activity (exploring motivations)
The Way of the Beaver: Everyone is Capable and we do not Interfere with another Persons Activity
Who Owns the Monkey: We Strive to Owns and Solve our Problems
Gift of the Goose: We Encourage and Celebrate Our Own and Others Achievements

With this understanding, the environment provided is warm, involved, productive and most of all, FUN!!

We think that within another 10 years this would be a great model for schooling in the 21st century, and we are currently exploring how this could work. We have much support from the NEV Community to pursue this complementary approach to mainstream education.

Birthday Savings
We aim to ensure that our programme is accessible and affordable. For the Winter 2015 programme, you get full day care for half day rates. That is $35/day a saving of $20. To take us up on this offer like our Facebook page.

A Frosty Winter Solstice
The longest night and shortest day is about to arrive, but the feeling of a real bitter cold winter has not eventuated. There has been no snow for those avid skiers, but the Mid Winter Carnival held in the Octagon on Saturday 22nd June will prove to be a very popular family affair. Last years theme of a Frosty Night saw some great lanterns including one in the shape of a Unicorn. Filipa Crofskey, Jay and Drew coordinated the construction of these great lanterns, holding several workshops in the lead up to the carnival. We are so please to be able to have Drew and Jay as part of our gifted tutors on the programme. Well done once again!!

Venues
North East Valley Normal School
Monday 7th to Friday 17th July 2015
8.30-5.30 Daily

Maori Hill
Kaikorai Rugby Club
Lynn Street
Monday 13th to Friday 17th July 2015 (second week only)
8.30-5.30 Daily

The Football Mad World Cup Coaching Clinic
The national football teams for each of the countries in the World Cup have been playing for the prestige of top team. This is a timely reminder of how popular it is as a junior sport in and around Dunedin.

Kidz Inc working with Northern Junior Association Football Club will be offering a three day football coaching clinic. Details as follows:

When: Monday 6th July to Wednesday 8th July 2014
Time: 10.00am to 3.00pm
Venue: North East Valley School
Cost: $35/day
Ages:5-14 years

There will be warm ups, skill development and drills, small sided games team building activities. If you want to give your football family a firm foot up then contact us for more details.

The clinic will be giving some of our youth players opportunity to develop their coaching skills and thus provide some depth in the club for coaching junior teams in the future. LPHS Girls Captain and Otago Rep player Maddy Bowen will be leading this great opportunity.

Winter Activities
Kidz Inc provides a range of structured and self directed activities for children attending. We believe that when they are involved in the planning of the programme we get greater engagement and the fun factor is increased.

Some structured activities that will be provided will include digital media and animation, online games development, jewelry and pewter casting, musical instrument construction, print making, the football mad academy and food technology as starting points. If children come to the programme with ideas of their own, we work at providing the resources to make it happen. Self directed activities include the LEGO construction table, hut making, table top board games as well as our peer support programme.

Thursday is MOVIE Day where we take the opportunity to walk to the Rialto and watch selected movies and visit the Art Gallery and city library. This is now a bit of a Kidz Inc institution.

WINZ Childcare Subsidy Renewal Forms
If you are a parent that has their childcare subsidised by Work and Income, then you will have received in the post last week a renewal form. This needs to be completed and returned back to WINZ to ensure that you keep getting the subsidy for your childcare needs.

If you have not received one and have been getting subsidised care, contact WINZ, so that there is no delay for the Winter school holidays.

If you do not receive childcare subsidies, it is still worth looking into the income thresholds, as these have changed. You can find this information here. Every little bit of support helps.

Enrolment Forms
We would like to thank everyone for the brilliant effort in having enrolment forms completed and up to date with contact information and child/rens health details. This really supports our quality control to ensure we have caregiver contact numbers, doctor & medical conditions. We will have enrolment forms available on site for the Winter 2015 programme if you arrive without one. They are available to download on our website here.

The Last Laugh

Tough Teacher
A school teacher injured his back and had to wear a plaster cast around
the upper part of his body. It fit under his shirt and was not
noticeable at all. On the first day of school, still with the cast under
his shirt, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in
school.

Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, he opened the window as
wide as possible and then busied himself with desk work. When a strong
breeze made his tie flap, he took the desk stapler and stapled the tie
to his chest.

He had no trouble with discipline that year.

Thanks for getting through to the end of this newsletter; it has been a long one. We look forward to seeing you over the winter holidays. Kidz Inc NEV service is to meet the childcare needs of the NEV community and surrounding suburbs, including Pine Hill, Opoho, Liberton, Ravensbourne and West Harbour as well as parents who may be studying at the Otago University. Spaces are still available if you are keen to be a part of the Kidz Inc Experience at NEV.

Metiria Turai & Green OSCAR
Metiria paid a visit to the NEV community a couple of weeks ago to talk with us about how community-led initiatives take place in the valley. Green party policy will make after school and holiday programmes available for all children. This is a policy we strongly support. Furthermore Metiria was very interested in how Kidz Inc works with children to have such a high level of engagement and no behaviour issues. She saw that what we were doing was more than childcare, we explained that our focus was developing their capability and character through enrichment activities. Watch this space for further developments.

Saturday ODT Feature Article
On the first weekend of the school holidays (Sat 27th Sept) the ODT will feature an article about myself and Kidz Inc. It will discuss the development and growth of Kidz Inc from its humble beginnings to the community service that it is today. It covers the philosophy of how we work with children and the tools that we have developed to engage children and provide enrichment activities. It will explore the changing nature of holiday programmes and what experiences and memories children would get out of attending our holiday programme. The ODT will present this feature in a new magazine format for the first time. Enjoy the article and share.

Like Us on Facebook
We have a page set up that we encourage parents to like. There are some posts that ask for you to feedback on the type of programme your child/ren would like to be involved in. We also post articles that are relevant to the focus we have in community development through working with children and families in the community. You can find the Kidz Inc Facebook page here.

Enrolment Steps
If you are looking to enrol your child/ren into our holiday programme please contact us and provide the name/s of your children, their age and the school they attend and the dates that they will be attending and which venue you would like them to attend (Maori Hill or NEV). If you are seeking a WINZ subsidy, you will need to let us know in advance.
