Hi Everyone

The calendar has just turned over for 2018 and we are looking forward to the days and the benefits that it will bring to us all. As the summer continues to bring warm weather, there are things growing in the community we call the Tinker School.

2018

2017 was a year of few downs and many ups. We access no government funding, which means that we are dependent on parent fees and other initiatives. After school course numbers dropped with the departure of many of our international families midway through the year. They were very supportive of what we do as it contrasts greatly to the education they receive in their home countries. We were involved in the Love the Lindsey CreekFest and continue to be involved with local sporting groups and other community activities.

Summer Courses 2018

The Tinker School commences its care and enrichment programmes on Wednesday 3rd January 2018. We are open daily from 8.30-5.30. To make a booking contact us here. Check out here, to find out more of the types of activities and projects being offered this summer.

After School Care & Enrichment 2018

The Tinker School ASC&E programme starts on Monday 29th January 2018. It runs from 3.00-5.30 daily. We pick up from NEVN School. Intermediate and secondary students can be involved in projects of their own design. Check out the Tinker School facebook page for more information or check out our website page here. To book your tinkerer in for the start of the new school year, contact us here.

Tinker School Catchment

The Tinker School service is placed to meet the childcare needs of the NEV community and surrounding suburbs, including Pine Hill, Opoho, Liberton, Ravensbourne and West Harbour as well as parents who may be studying or working at the Otago University or Polytech. Spaces are available if you are keen to be a part of the Tinker School Experience at NEV.

Northern Galaxy Football Academy

As part of our commitment to develop youth leadership, we will be training our Northern Junior Youth Grade team to deliver a coaching programme for 6-12 year old footballers.

We are working in partnership with Northern Junior Association Football Club (NJAFC for short), who along with Maori Hill are under the umbrella of Northern Football Club (senior club). This relationship is to support NJAFC their QualityMark accreditation football provider in Dunedin. This is an exciting prospect for the football commmunity as it will access resources, people and equipment to keep building and developing football in our area.

All proceeds from the coaching clinic will go towards continued youth development and leadership opportunities in North Dunedin.

Tinker School is working with NJAFC to support football development in Dunedin, together we are training youth and willing parents to become coaches. We will be offering the New Zealand Football training programme in a team coaching environment that will have a the skills and games to build any young players’ enthusiasm in this sport. More information can be found here.

Dates: 24th-26th January 2018
Time:   10.00-3.00
Venue: Chingford Park
Cost:    $20/day/player

Prototype Academy

We had a successful team up with Phillipa Dick from Hatch, Keir Russell from Fablab, and Amadeo Ballesteros from Fun Science, during the Winter holiday programme. It was a vibrant and exciting two weeks. The aim was to work together, share ideas, resources and staff to provide an unique holiday experience. Since the team up, we established the Hive Otago Trust, and were successful in securing a GigCity grant to develop digital literacy around Dunedin. Watch this space as this unfolds in 2018.

Tinker Coffee & Barista

Tinker School and Grid Coffee partnered to present a youth development proposal to the Valley Project Dragons' Den event. Shortly after, we ran an open day in December for enrolments and will be starting our first youth coffee & barista training course starting in February. If you have teenagers who are interested then contact us.

Tinker School Flea Market

Tinker School has managed to secure another space in the building, which is dedicated to resource storage and small scale workshop. It works beautifully. During the week, tinkerers work and build their projects. Staff also work on projects. Once a month we will be running a Tinker School Flea Market. In November we ran our first market day, had the bunting out to show that there was something on. Stallholders presented handmade products, coffee was available, and music provided by Catgut & Steel, and Spinster, two local artists who supported this initiative. We aim to make this a regular event to encourage community vitality, resilience and entrepreneurship.

Twilight Tinkering Classes

We opened the Tinker School in the evenings over the Spring and Summer to give adults the chance to tinker as well. We offered woodcraft, cabinetmaking, blacksmithing, repurposing and restoration and leather craft. In 2018, if any of these peak an interest in your tinkering soul, then contact us to discuss how these classes may work for you. This is an exciting opportunity we are keen to continue.

Like Us on Facebook

We have a page set up that we encourage parents to like. There are some posts that ask for you to feedback on the type of programme your child/ren would like to be involved in. We also post articles that are relevant to the focus we have in community development through working with children and families in the community. You can find the Tinker School Facebook page here.

Enrolment Steps

If you are looking to enrol your child/ren into our holiday programme please contact us and provide the name/s of your children, their age and the school they attend and the dates that they will be attending.

If you are seeking a WINZ subsidy, we are not accredited and you would not be eligible.

If you are an existing customer you will not need to fill out another enrolment form, you will just need to let us know if any of the details have changed. If you are enrolling for the first time, you will need to fill in an enrolment form and bring it along on the first day.

Affordable Childcare

The Tinker School ensure that all children can have access to our experience. This summer, parents can have full day access to the programme for half day price. That is a $60.00 day programme for only $40.00+GST.

Invoicing & Payment Plans

All parents are invoiced at the end of the programme. If you are new to the programme, we ask for a deposit up front before the commencement of the programme.

If you are looking to reduce the costs and will be seeking long term use of our holiday programme, we have payment plans that take the financial pressure off families by spreading the cost over a 12 month period. For more information regarding this service follow the link here.

We receive no funding and operate entirely on Parent Fees.

Therefore, we ask that parents that have outstanding accounts to finalise them by the end of the school term. The cash flow of our business is directly tagged to pay our great staff. To ensure that our great service continues your prompt settlement of accounts is vital.
