Winter Solstice is Coming 2015

Children have to be educated, but they have also to be left to educate themselves.

Hi Everyone,

The school term is a long one with six weeks to go. It will be a long term for all children, and they will be looking forward to their break. We will be putting together a great programme for this Winter.

Kidz Inc 10th Birthday

Kidz Inc is in its 10th year of operation and we are celebrating. We got our start providing the school holiday programme for Fisher and Paykel in 2004 and have not looked back. They saw that we offered a rich experience in the activities that we offered, as many of our staff have very pragmatic skills in design and technology. Drew Wills is our resident guru in this area and he has been on board since the beginning and still offers his ingenuity today.

We have a very particular philosophy in regards to working with children, as we constantly explore the best approaches to providing enrichment activities and encouraging children to take ownership of the day. We have a technology totem that acts as a guide to facilitate this:

The Spirit of the Squirrel: Engage in Meaningful and Purposeful Activity (exploring motivations)
The Way of the Beaver: Everyone is Capable and we do not Interfere with another Persons Activity
Who Owns the Monkey: We Strive to Owns and Solve our Problems
Gift of the Goose: We Encourage and Celebrate Our Own and Others Achievements

With this understanding, the environment provided is warm, involved, productive and most of all, FUN!!

We think that within another 10 years this would be a great model for schooling in the 21st century, and we are currently exploring how this could work. We have much support from the NEV Community to pursue this complementary approach to mainstream education.

Birthday Savings
We aim to ensure that our programme is accessible and affordable. For the Winter 2015 programme, you get full day care for half day rates. That is $35/day a saving of $20. To take us up on this offer like our Facebook page.

A Frosty Winter Solstice

The longest night and shortest day is about to arrive, but the feeling of a real bitter cold winter has not eventuated. There has been no snow for those avid skiers, but the Mid Winter Carnival held in the Octagon on Saturday 22nd June will prove to be a very popular family affair. Last years theme of a Frosty Night saw some great lanterns including one in the shape of a Unicorn. Filipa Crofskey, Jay and Drew coordinated the construction of these great lanterns, holding several workshops in the lead up to the carnival. We are so please to be able to have Drew and Jay as part of our gifted tutors on the programme. Well done once again!!

The Football Mad World Cup Coaching Clinic

The national football teams for each of the countries in the World Cup have been playing for the prestige of top team. This is a timely reminder of how popular it is as a junior sport in and around Dunedin.

Kidz Inc working with Northern Junior Association Football Club will be offering a three day football coaching clinic. Details as follows:

When: Monday 6th July to Wednesday 8th July 2014
Time: 10.00am to 3.00pm
Venue: North East Valley School
Cost: $35/day
Ages:5-14 years

There will be warm ups, skill development and drills, small sided games team building activities. If you want to give your football family a firm foot up then contact us for more details.

The clinic will be giving some of our youth players opportunity to develop their coaching skills and thus provide some depth in the club for coaching junior teams in the future. LPHS Girls Captain and Otago Rep player Maddy Bowen will be leading this great opportunity.

Winter Activities

Kidz Inc provides a range of structured and self directed activities for children attending. We believe that when they are involved in the planning of the programme we get greater engagement and the fun factor is increased.

Some structured activities that will be provided will include digital media and animation, online games development, jewelry and pewter casting, musical instrument construction, print making, the football mad academy and food technology as starting points. If children come to the programme with ideas of their own, we work at providing the resources to make it happen. Self directed activities include the LEGO construction table, hut making, table top board games as well as our peer support programme.

Thursday is MOVIE Day where we take the opportunity to walk to the Rialto and watch selected movies and visit the Art Gallery and city library. This is now a bit of a Kidz Inc institution.

WINZ Childcare Subsidy Renewal Forms

If you are a parent that has their childcare subsidised by Work and Income, then you will have received in the post last week a renewal form. This needs to be completed and returned back to WINZ to ensure that you keep getting the subsidy for your childcare needs.

If you have not received one and have been getting subsidised care, contact WINZ, so that there is no delay for the Winter school holidays.

If you do not receive childcare subsidies, it is still worth looking into the income thresholds, as these have changed. You can find this information here. Every little bit of support helps.

Enrolment Forms

We would like to thank everyone for the brilliant effort in having enrolment forms completed and up to date with contact information and child/rens health details. This really supports our quality control to ensure we have caregiver contact numbers, doctor & medical conditions. We will have enrolment forms available on site for the Winter 2015 programme if you arrive without one. They are available to download on our website here.

The Last Laugh

Tough Teacher

A school teacher injured his back and had to wear a plaster cast around
the upper part of his body. It fit under his shirt and was not
noticeable at all. On the first day of school, still with the cast under
his shirt, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in

Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, he opened the window as
wide as possible and then busied himself with desk work. When a strong
breeze made his tie flap, he took the desk stapler and stapled the tie
to his chest.

He had no trouble with discipline that year.

Thanks for getting through to the end of this newsletter; it has been a long one. We look forward to seeing you over the winter holidays. In the meantime, see you next newsletter.
